There are many initiatives working with young people - some supported by charities, others by government departments. BT people are involved in many activities supporting young people through individual choice. The main focus for BT Volunteers is to deliver the BT Education programme (www.bt.com/education) in schools. However, BT does support a number of related activities for schools:

Work Experience Young Enterprise
Student Summer Placements Partners in Leadership
Study help Mentoring

    Work Experience

BT can provide work experience placements, when capacity is available. However, there is no central placement service, so it is up to the school or individual to find someone in BT willing to manage the placement. This could be done via a friend, colleague or open letter to a BT building.

Once someone has agreed to manage the placement, all internal systems are in place to support the work experience student. Internal information is now available from BT's Intranet. Click "W" on the alphabetised list and scroll down to "Work Experience".

The student will be issued with a certificate of attendance and will probably be given a Communication Project as a focus during the placement.

    Mentoring

BT, through its Roots and Wings scheme, has a history of providing one-to-one mentoring. BT Volunteers are open to the ongoing provision of 1:1 mentoring although involvement in the scheme is at the discretion of individual volunteers. As of September however, trials are taking place into a more efficient e-mentoring scheme which allows volunteers to form a mentoring relationship with a young person via a secure e-mail process.
